Cemplank Is Real Fiber Cement — So Why Not Use It?

Homeowners in Bradenton sometimes ask us why we don't offer Cemplank, since it's a legitimate fiber cement product and, on paper, looks like a reasonable alternative to James Hardie. It's a fair question, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch. Fiber cement as a category is a good choice for Manatee County — it stands up to hurricane-force winds, wind-driven rain, and salt air far better than vinyl or wood. Our issue isn't with fiber cement as a material. It's with the specific product, support structure, and finish system behind Cemplank compared to what we've standardized on.

What Cemplank Gets Right

To be fair to the product: Cemplank is manufactured fiber cement, meaning it shares the same basic composition as James Hardie board — cellulose fiber, sand, and Portland cement, cured into a dense, non-combustible panel. It resists rot, won't feed termites, and holds paint better than wood siding. For a homeowner comparing it only to vinyl or untreated wood, Cemplank is a step up. We're not disputing that.

Where the Trade-Offs Show Up

Factory Finish Consistency

The biggest gap we see in the field is the factory-applied finish. James Hardie's ColorPlus finish is baked on in a controlled process with a specific baked-on warranty against fading and peeling. Cemplank offers primed and prefinished options, but the finish warranty terms and the consistency of that finish from batch to batch are not something we can vouch for the way we can with Hardie's system. On the Gulf Coast, where UV exposure runs nearly year-round and salt air accelerates wear on any painted surface, finish quality isn't cosmetic — it's the difference between repainting in year 6 versus not repainting for well over a decade.

Climate-Engineered Product Lines

James Hardie builds region-specific HZ (HardieZone) product lines engineered for different moisture and humidity profiles. That's not marketing — it changes how the board is formulated and how it performs against the wind-driven rain and humidity swings that are routine here in Manatee County. We haven't seen a comparable climate-zone engineering approach documented for Cemplank, and when we're specifying a product for hurricane-adjacent coastal exposure, we want documented engineering behind it, not an assumption that "fiber cement is fiber cement."

Warranty Structure and Transferability

Warranty terms matter more than most homeowners realize until they try to use one. James Hardie's warranty is well-documented, transferable to a subsequent owner, and backed by a manufacturer with a long track record in this exact climate. That transferability matters in a market like Bradenton's, where homes change hands regularly and a strong, transferable warranty is a real selling point at resale. We want to be able to tell a homeowner exactly what's covered, for how long, and that it survives the next sale — and we can do that confidently with Hardie.

Installation Sensitivity and Local Support

Fiber cement in general is installation-sensitive — proper fastening, clearances, and caulking matter enormously, and mistakes show up years later as cracking or moisture intrusion. Where James Hardie has an edge is in the depth of installer training, published local install guidance, and distributor support in Florida specifically. That local backbone means better product availability, more consistent batch quality, and faster resolution if something ever does need to be addressed under warranty. We didn't find the same depth of regional support and installer infrastructure behind Cemplank in our market.

Why We Standardized on James Hardie

We made a decision a while back to install one fiber cement system rather than several, and to build our crews' expertise around it rather than spreading that knowledge thin across multiple manufacturers. James Hardie won that decision because of the combination above: a documented factory finish with a real warranty behind it, product lines actually engineered for coastal humidity and storm exposure, a warranty that transfers with the home, and enough local installer support that we can stand behind the work for the long haul. In a county that sees direct hurricane risk, relentless UV, and salt air working on every exterior surface, we'd rather install fewer products well than more products adequately.
