Fiber cement is non-combustible, dimensionally stable in heat and humidity swings, and it holds up to wind-driven rain and salt air better than the alternatives we've chosen not to carry. Vinyl can warp and become brittle under sustained Florida UV, wood-based products are more sensitive to moisture intrusion in a humid climate, and not every fiber cement product on the market is engineered the same way for this region.
James Hardie makes that regional engineering explicit with its HZ product lines. HZ10 is formulated for hot, humid climates like ours, with a moisture and mold resistance profile suited to year-round humidity. HZ5 is built for freeze-thaw climates and isn't what we install here. That distinction matters more than most homeowners realize when they're comparing quotes, because "James Hardie siding" installed with the wrong climate engineering, or installed to a lower standard than the manufacturer specifies, doesn't perform the way the product is capable of performing.
The factory-applied ColorPlus finish is also part of why we standardized on this product. It's baked on and warrantied against fading and peeling in a way field-applied paint isn't, which matters directly in a location that gets this much sun.
What Correct Installation Involves
The product is only half the equation. A correct James Hardie installation in a wind and moisture-exposed area like Parrish involves getting every one of these details right:
- A continuous, correctly lapped water-resistive barrier behind the siding, with no gaps at seams or penetrations.
